Why Petty

You talk to the person who works on your car.

Petty Auto Repair is a neighborhood shop in Dorchester, owned and run by Jose Luis Baez, so the person you talk to is the person responsible for your car. The work is the work a car actually needs most: diagnostics that find the real cause, engine repair from a small fix to a full rebuild, brakes, and batteries.

You get a straight explanation in English or Spanish, without the runaround. And you are not driving across Boston for it: the shop is right here in 02124.

How it works

How a repair works here

No slogans. These four things happen on every job because Massachusetts requires them of every repair shop, and because it is how we work.

  1. Step 1

A written estimate, signed by you, before any work starts

Before we touch the car you get an estimate in writing that says what will be done and what it will cost, and you sign it. Nothing gets added without your OK.

  2. Step 2

Diagnosis and storage charges, told up front

If there is a charge to find the problem, or to keep the car while you decide, you hear about it before you agree to anything, not on the bill.

  3. Step 3

Your replaced parts come back to you, if you ask

Say so when you drop the car off and the parts we take out go in a box for you. You can see what was worn and what was replaced.

  4. Step 4

An itemized bill that matches the estimate

Parts and labor, line by line, so the bill reads like the estimate you signed. If something changed along the way, you already knew about it.

Not sure what the car needs? Start with a diagnostic. We find the cause, not just the symptom, and explain what the car needs before you decide.

FAQ

Questions people ask

My check engine light is on. Can I keep driving?
If it is steady, get it checked soon; the car is telling you something is off. If it is flashing, that is an active misfire: pull over when it is safe and call us, because driving on it can damage the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part. Either way, a diagnostic tells you exactly what is going on.
How do I know if my brakes need work?
Squealing is the early warning. Grinding, a soft or sinking pedal, pulsing in the pedal, pulling to one side or a brake warning light mean come in now. We inspect first and tell you what actually needs replacing.
How long does a car battery last, and how do I know mine is going?
Most last about three to five years. Slow cranking, dim lights at idle, a battery warning light or needing a jump start are the usual signs. A quick test tells you for sure, and it is worth doing before winter.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. You can call, message and get your explanation in Spanish, and this whole site is in Spanish too.
