A neighborhood shop, run by the person who works on your car.

Petty Auto Repair is a local shop run by Jose Luis Baez. We find the problem, explain it in plain words, and fix it, from the check engine light to brakes and batteries. Without the runaround.

Diagnostics, engine repair and overhaul, brakes and batteries. English and Spanish. Right here in 02124, so you are not driving across Boston for it.

What we do

Four things, done properly. Each one has its own page with what is included and the signs to look for.

Full vehicle diagnostics

Check engine light on? We run advanced diagnostics to detect any issue, from engine codes to electrical faults, so you know exactly what your car needs before anything gets replaced.

Engine repair and overhaul

Minor repair or full rebuild. We handle leaks, misfires and power loss and get the engine back to peak performance. Not every engine problem needs an overhaul, and we will tell you when it does not.

Brake services

Pad replacement, rotor resurfacing and full brake inspections. Your safety comes first. We inspect first and tell you what actually needs replacing.

Battery services

From a battery check to a replacement, we make sure your vehicle powers on every time. Boston winters are hard on batteries: a quick test before the cold tells you whether yours will make it to spring.

How a repair works here

No surprises on the bill. This is how every job goes, and it is what Massachusetts consumer rules require of every repair shop.

  1. You get a written estimate before any work starts

We put the work and the price in writing, you sign it, and then we start. Nothing is added without your OK first.

  2. Diagnosis and storage charges are told to you up front

If there is a charge to find the problem, or to keep the car here, you hear it before you agree to anything.

  3. Your replaced parts come back to you if you ask

Say the word and the old parts go in the trunk, so you can see what was worn and what was changed.

  4. Your bill is itemized

Parts and labor, line by line, matching the estimate you signed.

These are the obligations every Massachusetts repair shop has under 940 CMR 5.05, the state's auto repair regulation. We put them here so you know what to expect, not as a boast.

Can you fix it today?

Sometimes. It depends on what the car needs and whether the part is on hand. Call before you come and we will tell you honestly.

How much will it cost?

We will not guess over the phone. We look at the car, write the estimate, and you decide. The estimate is the price unless you approve a change.

Questions people ask

My check engine light is on. Can I keep driving?

If it is steady, get it checked soon; the car is telling you something is off. If it is flashing, that is an active misfire: pull over when it is safe and call us, because driving on it can damage the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part. Either way, a diagnostic tells you exactly what is going on.

How do I know if my brakes need work?

Squealing is the early warning. Grinding, a soft or sinking pedal, pulsing in the pedal, pulling to one side or a brake warning light mean come in now. We inspect first and tell you what actually needs replacing. More about brake services.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. You can call, message and get your explanation in Spanish, and this whole site is in Spanish too.

Do I need an appointment, or can I just come in?

A quick call to (857) 756-0675 first means we are ready for you. {{WALK_INS_OR_APPOINTMENTS}}
